ask的基本意思是“问,询问”,指对不知道或不明白的事情、道理、情况
提出问题请别人解答,或向别人打听。探询以便了解,所闻之事与被询问者
可能相关,也可能无关。
ask还可作“请求,要求”,指说明自己的请求和愿望,以获得所要的东西
或所要达到的目的,有期望答复(特别是肯定的答复)的含义。
ask还可引申表示“邀请”。ask是最普通的不带感情色彩的用词,使用范围
广,无论是下级对上级,晚辈对长辈,学生对老师均可使用。
1.ask在大部分情况下是指“问”,如ask her name(问她的名字),
ask the way(问路),但在与price搭配时,表达两种意思,“问价”和“讨价”。
I asked her the price.
这里指问价。
I asked the price of $20.
这里指讨价。
2.ask后可带直接宾语和间接宾语,如ask his name和ask him。也可带双宾语,
但是要注意将间接宾语(指人的词)先放在前面,中间不需要任何介词连接。
She asked me my opinion.
她问我的意见。
3.ask后还可以带不定式。
I asked to go home.
I asked John to go home.
I asked for the children to have extr milk.
注意下列各句的意思:
1.She asked me something.
她问我一个问题,一些事。
2.She asked me for something.
她向我要些东西。
3.He asked about her.
他问起她。
4.He asked after she.
他问起她的健康情况。
5.He asked for her.
他问起要见她,与其联系。
英语国家人们相互的称呼,和我国的习惯相差很大,值得我们了解一下,以免交往
接触中使用不当。
对于几个或更多的成年男子,可尊称他们为gentlemen,意为“先生们”。
对于一位不知名的男子,可称为gentleman或sir,但不宜单独用mister这个字称呼他,
因为只是小孩子或较低微的人的口吻,对于已知其姓氏的男子,可在他的姓(family name)
前冠以Mr.,如Mr Smith,但不要再他的名前冠以Mr,如Mr Jack.Mr为Mister的略语,
也可读为/misto/。用在姓前时,不要全部拼写出来。比如说Gregory Wood和Milo Weaver
两个人,在初认识时可互称Mr.Weaver和Mr.Wood,在比较熟识后,可互称对方的名
(first name),即Gregory(或Greg)和Milo。
按英语国家的习惯,妇女结婚后都使用丈夫的姓。一个已婚妇女的全名是以自己的first
name加上丈夫的family name。比如说Jane Brown与Greg Wood结婚后,她便称Jane Wood,
而Jane Brown便成为“未嫁时的名字”(maiden name)。而很少使用。她在未嫁时被
称为Miss Brown,嫁后便被称为Mrs.Wood。Mrs读作/misiz/,由来于mistress,但后者有别的
意思。不再当“夫人,太太”讲了。Mrs,从不脱离姓名单独使用;问别人的夫人好,
说How is the miss is?是故作诙谐,不但大雅的。对于熟悉的人,Jane Brown不论
婚前婚后都只称Jane就可以了。
